OK…OK…I know that not everyone is enthusiastic about giving blood…But man up and make a donation at the CT Grey Blood Drive on Feb. 17, 2018 at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn in Wallingford. See details below! PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! The more people register early, the more staff they will assign and the faster all this will go. Join us and watch manly men blanch…that means turn white if you are a back… wobble around and faint! You’d be amazed at the number of guys you think are pretty strong who are actually a bunch of weenies. And there will be fun and frivolity to follow. Come out and make fun of your teammates!

Look, I know that some of you, especially the backs, are ‘fraidy scared of giving blood…others of can’t give because of travelling to foreign lands and contracting various diseases… But the Red Cross has a serious problem with the stockpile of blood due to repeated cancellations of blood drives. Man up and donate… If they’ll take mine, they’ll take yours. AND PLEASE PRE-REGISTER ASAP….THEY NEED TO PLAN FOR STAFF….PRE-REGISTER EVEN IF YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT!

A message from one time rugby player Mike “Lucifer” Meyer:

Hello everyone,
The Connecticut Rugby Blood Drive is upon us again and is on Feb 17th from 9am to 2pm at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn in Wallingford, CT (1074 colony Rd Wallingford, CT).  Can you all please let the teams your are affiliated with know about the event.  To schedule a time to give blood (by doing so there is no wait) all you need to do is call 1-800-733-2767 OR ONLINE @ REDCROSSBLOOD.ORG
Our annual fundraiser and game with the CT Jammers was a huge success with SCSU, NH Old Blacks,  Sacred heart U, Mitchell College and MOB all joining 2 CT GREY teams for a great day of rugby. Hoppy and Benito were unable to join us so things went fairly smoothly even though Mike ” Lucifer” Meyer was there. The GREY didn’t win…as usual… but the the Jammers did. And you should have seen Bud Harvey wandering around the court attempting to referee this bunch…with a pink shirt on no less… DeanO “See You Next Tuesday” Jorgensen would have been proud! And the GREY only got one stern talking too. Please see below.

Hello Smash Bowl Players and Teams!

On behalf of Gaylord Hospital Sports Association and the Gaylord Jammers Wheelchair Rugby Team, we would like to thank you for participating in the 2018 Smash Bowl AB Wheelchair Rugby Tournament held at Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, February 3, 2018.  We are excited about the success of the event!  We hope everyone had fun and we appreciate your support of the Gaylord Jammers Wheelchair Rugby Team!

The Sports Association would like to recognize and thank Professors MaryJo Archambault and Mike Dodge from Southern Connecticut State University and the Institute for Inclusive Recreation and Adaptive Sport for hosting the Smash Bowl and helping to make this event a success!

Thank you to the teams who joined us for this inaugural event:  the CT Grey Rugby Team, New Haven Rugby Club, Gaylord Hospital, SCSU Rugby, SCSU Therapeutic Recreation, Sacred Heart University, Mitchell College Rugby and MOB Rugby.  The SCSU Rugby team, with some help from the New Haven Rugby Club, won the Smash Bowl Championship game after the 8 team bracket.  The SCSU team then went on and played the Gaylord Jammers for the overall Championship.  The Jammers came out on top!  Great effort and spirited play by all!  Also, thank you to the teams who were willing to be flexible with your scheduled game times so that all teams could play during the tournament.

We would also like to thank all the volunteers, supporters, referees and teams for helping to make this tournament a success!  Without the support of the volunteers, this tournament would not be possible!

Thank you to Janet from Cool Rugby Photos for taking some amazing photos of the event.  Her photos can be viewed here:

Also, watch for some footage of the event on Tuesday, Feb 13th when Gaylord Jammers athlete Joe Stone is featured on WFSB Channel 3’s Awesome Athletes Segment on the 6:00 News!

Look for additional photos to be posted on the Gaylord Sports Association Facebook page:

We are also pleased to announce that we will holding the Smash Bowl again next year and hope to make it an annual event!

See everyone next year!
